Servicing an orchard and now a wine growing district Alexandra was originally a gold town renamed after Princess Alexandra in 1863. The information centreis part of Alexandra's new cultural centre called "Central Stories" in Pioneer park. Here there is a gallery and a museum, worth visiting, with newly implemented geological and historical exhibits.
A notable feature of Alexandra is the illuminated clock with an 11 metre diameter face on a cliff to the east of the town. An hour's (return) walk will take you to its foot. Get a pamphlet from the Information Centre. Alexandra is on the Otago Central Rail Trail and also at one end of the Roxburgh Gorge cycling trail.
