Kanuka Track, Bendigo, Central Otago
Kanuka is a fragrant tree, the sibling of the Manuka, which imbues honey products with so much health they are snapped up offshore at alarming prices. Kanuka is the true mountain goat of the family, thriving in conditions far more arid and extreme than Manuka many other native trees, and growing up to 15 metres tall. Here is a 'bush walk' in the dry depths of Otago, the bush being a scattering of second growth Kanuka trees on the tops above the old Bendigo gold workings.
Access is easy, from Crippletown, via Bendigo, parking is at Logantown, (no actual towns). The 10km loop is a full day walk, but a shorter 90 minute version involves cutting back down the hill at Burma Road. The meandering track is dotted with remnants of gold workings, probably the most scenic being Chinamans Creek, where there is a bivvy and stone ruins.
