298 De Malmanches Road, Mokihinui, Buller
One of the last rushes of the sixties took place at the Mokihinui beach. Gold workings and quartz mines extended up the river past Seddonville. The township, named Kynnersley, however, was short-lived. Today, a handful of cottages hunker down at the mouth of the river.
At the Mokihinui River the Westport-Karamea Rd heads inland but it is worth stopping here to experience a wonderful West Coast beach stretching from the river mouth north to Gentle Annie Point. Gentle-Annie is a coastal enclave with its own warm frost free microclimate. Accommodation at 'Gentle Annie' comes in a range of styles: houses, beach cabins, cottages and camp sites. There is also an eating place, the 'Cow Shed Cafe' a restaurant operating in what was once a functional cow shed. The safe place to swim is in the rock pools - not the sea!
