147 Rawhiti Road, Urupukapuka Island, Bay of Islands
The tramp starts at spectacular Te Rawhiti (Oke Bay) and takes you over the spine of the dragon through native bush, scenic beauty and vast ocean and island views to the Cape Brett Lighthouse. The full distance is 20km (8 hours tramping).
You can return along the track after staying overnight in the old lighthouse keepers house now a DOC hut or get a boat ride back. There’s the option to take guided and partially assisted walks with Cape Brett Walkways or go it alone. In which case there are opportunities for a ride with boats that make day trips out to the Cape to show passengers a nearby sightseeing icon jutting from the sea known as The Hole in the Rock.
If you chose to go independently, you can book the Department of Conservation owned hut at DOC’s Russell headquarters. And be sure to take water as there is none on the walk.
