Kentish Hotel Waiuku

Auckland Community Halls

Waiuku has been blessed with this elegant historic hotel since 1853, thanks to one of the town's founding fathers, Edward Constable.

The advent of the Kentish was the advent of Waiuku, providing a stopping place enroute between the Waikato and Auckland, in the days of flaxmilling and other early trades. As well as holding the country's first liqour licence and providing accommodation, the Kentish is the centre of the community, providing a space where the town's first magistrate was elected amongst other important functions. Renovations and extensions in the 1890s reportedly resulted in the impressive frontage on Queen Street that still draws the visitors in today. The builder at that time was a Mr Rossiter, who also built the Waiuku Courthouse and other buildings of note throughout wider Auckland.

Unlike some small town hotels which have fallen into poor repair, the Kentish is thriving, and Waiuku is growing.
