2 Puawai Place, Northcote, Auckland
Onepoto Domain
by Celia Walker
Another of Auckland’s many volcanic remnants, Onepoto Basin or Te Kopua o Matakerepo is a shallow explosion crater thought to be one of the oldest volcanoes in the Auckland area, dating back to 250,000 years ago.
Walking tracks include a boardwalk across the raupo, sedges and rushes of the freshwater wetland, and a trail through the remnants of native bush around the northern edge. A large portion of the crater has been reclaimed to make way for sports fields, a children’s cycling track and playground, and an artificial pond used by model boat enthusiasts.
For those looking for a longer walk, on the other side of Exmouth Road is Tuff Crater, it has a walking and biking path.
