Omana Beach Road, Maraetai, Auckland
Picnic or camp and swim in the sea at this family park with pretty shelly beaches fringed by pohutukawas.
On the Beachlands side of the park is Te Puru Community Centre, including playing fields, a playground, tennis courts and a hill with a circular path and Pou erected to recognise the Tangata Whenua, Ngai Tai.
Over the splendid bridge crossing the wetlands, the park is in two distinct parts, one which has reverted to second growth bush, with tended paths through it, and the coastal side which is run as a farm. Paths along the clifftop lead towards Omana and Maraetai swimming beaches. There are several carparks. On weekends and public holidays, when the weather is good, this park can become overrun with visitors.
There is a well-preserved ring-ditch pa here and goats, sheep, pigs and other farm animals to visit, all tended by park rangers, as the park is a working farm. Two good playgrounds, BBQs, public toilets and a boat ramp are amongst the facilities. For one Sunday in March, the park lifts itself to another level, hosting Omana Children's Day, which includes activities like pony and tractor rides, sheep shearing demonstrations, sack races and other traditional kiwi fair activities.
The Te Puru bridge was designed by Sean Burke of the Isthmus Group.
