235 Maraetai Drive, Maraetai, Auckland
The prettier older sisters of Beachlands, Maraetai and adjoining Omana Regional Park, were originally occupied by the Ngai Tai Iwi. Beaches and hills, facing directly out into the Hauraki Gulf towards Waiheke make Maraetai particularly picturesque and have limited recent growth to only one subdivision as opposed to the rampant spread of Beachlands. There are few amenities here but the previously small primary school is overflowing with offspring from the housing estates in Beachlands.
The beautiful beachfront draws throngs of recreation seeking South Aucklanders during the summer months, especially on weekends and at the Christmas Break. The beachfront reserve here sports some playground equipment, recently upgraded walkways and an historic wharf. The winter often sees the road and beachfront properties subject to significant storms. The romantic notion of fish and chips on Maraetai Beach is not to be indulged unless you want to part with a cool 50 or more. The other cafes are friendly but can be slow in the busy season.
