Rakaia styles itself the Salmon Capital of New Zealand. Between October and April (the fishing season) anglers line the river mouth 16 kilometres east of the town. The town itself is at one end of a 1.8 km bridge across the braided Rakaia River. It is New Zealand’s longest.
