423 Mclennans Bush Road, Pudding Hill, Ashburton
This reserve, not far from Methven, has become widely known throughout the region for its display of rhododendrons in the spring (established and maintained by the Rhododendron Society in the 1960s) and the beautiful virgin bush throughout the year.
Named for the river and the brightly coloured southern Rata, the Rhododendrons surpass the native with their display of colour against the green hills.
It is an easy drive from Christchurch. In summer it is an ideal place for picnics with children and there are several pleasant walks, ranging from a little 15 minute track to a two hour walk further into Mt Hutt forest to Scott's Saddle.
