1130 Okains Bay Road, Okains Bay, Christchurch City
Christchurch City Community Halls
Although their settlements were small and isolated, and they were hard at work converting bush into pasture, the pioneers of the Peninsula bays were quick to build churches, schools and even libraries so that their spiritual, educational and cultural needs could be met. The Okains Bay library, a small wooden building that looks just that little bit grander than the cottages it resembles, was built in 1865. Its recent restoration was supported by the Parkinson Trust. Nearby, the Okains Bay school building, opened in 1872 and closed in 1968, is also to be restored. -JW
