210 Maranui Street, Papamoa Beach, Kairua, Tauranga City
With different variations on modern Maori housing popping up all over New Zealand, Nga Potiki a Tamapahore Trust have taken a more commercial approach with their latest development.
The Papamoa Block was a 30 acre Treaty Settlement block for the Iwi, and they have chosen to subdivide and sell the sections in the booming residential area, reserving 90 out of 240 for members of their Iwi, with subsidies available. The area has been designated Special Housing area, at least 30% of the homes need to be affordable..
Unlike some other papakainga, these houses will not be specially designed, they are to be built by housing companies like the rest of the subdivision, however the surrounds will include cultural markers. Government have promised to build a primary school nearby in 2019 and a Nga Potiki owned retirement village, Pacific Coast Village, is under constructionon the adjacent block.
Nga Potiki have employed the more traditional approach, Papakainga to their Mangatawa Kaumatua Village and Family Homes, have some farming operations and have plans for Commercial and Industrial developments.
