1 Harrop Street, Dunedin Central, Dunedin Central, Dunedin City
Completed in 1880, Dunedin’s Municipal Chambers stands tall above the Octagon. Of Italianate design and complete with Corinthian columns and an imposing staircase and balustrade, it is New Zealand's only surviving significant Victorian Town Hall.
R.A. Lawson, who also designed many other important Otago buildings was the architect.
The Chambers were once shorn of most of the fine clock tower which has since been magnificently reinstated by the Dunedin City Council. In 1929 a concert chamber and town hall were added behind the Municipal Chambers, and in the 1980s a new administration building, incorporating a new public library, was added to the Octagon.
Entrance to the Main Town Hall is from a paved forecourt area on Moray Place.
