825 Stafford Loop Road, Awatuna, Westland
'The Goldsborough' is shorthand for the area around Waimea Creek and associated tributaries which meander the flats north of the Arahura, from the Waimea Forest westwards to the Tasman Sea. Gold was found here, caused a rush and sustained a population for a short time from the 1860s.
One of these feeder creeks is named Shamrock and has been reserved as a gold fossicking area, where one may pan or sluice by hand.
You can picnic and camp here, thanks to a very basic camping ground managed by DOC, which actually used to be the town of Goldsborough. There are fire places. The best hints from visitors would be to look out for sandflies, and for the middle of summer when it gets busy.
