Ataturk Memorial

Wellington City Walks

Kemal Ataturk, the first president of modern Turkey, drew up the defence plans for the Gallipoli Peninsula, the scene of the military campaign which is regarded as a defining event in New Zealand's history.

A short walk from the car park (see the walkway map) leads up the hill to the memorial. Beneath the memorial is a container of soil from Anzac Cove, Gallipoli. There are splendid views of the Harbour entrance and Cook Strait.

The memorial can be visited as part of the Eastern Walkway. (A round trip along the Walkway and back along the road takes less than 2 hours)
