Aotea Track, Great Barrier Island, Hauraki Gulf Islands
PUSH PLAY TO LISTEN TO THE AUIDOGUIDE
Lying about 100 kilometres from downtown Auckland, on the outer edge of the Hauraki Gulf, Great Barrier or Aotea is the largest island off the North Island coast. Visitors reach here by a three hour ferry ride or a short plane ride and most stay a few days in the selection of resorts or backpacker type accommodations.
The island has a rugged landscape with large wilderness areas protected in public conservation land, and impressive white sand beaches. Isolation and less development pressure have left many natural areas intact and a rich collection of native plants and animals. Great Barrier was once mainly cloaked in kauri forests, but most of these were logged by early European settlers. Today, much of the island is covered with regenerating kauri forest and bush, usually dominated by känuka. About 850 people live on the island, and there are a number of small settlements with shops and accommodation including 6 DOC camping sites. There are plenty of short walks and tramping tracks. Medlands rent the cars, see the link below.
