1147 Takaka Hill Highway, Takaka Hill, Tasman
From a car park about two thirds of the way up the Takaka hill, a short (10 min) walk leads to a lookout with extensive views over the Tasman Bay and the surrounding hills. Along the walk are dramatic rock formations and sink holes typical of the Karst landscape of Takaka Hill. Interpretive panels explain how the landscape has been formed as mildly acidified water has dissolved the marble resulting in fissures in the rock and underground water-ways such as that which emerges at the Riwaka Resurgence. Hawkes Lookout features as a stop on the "Nelson Experiences" tour on the DayOut IPhone app.
