1 Hastings Street, Ponga, Auckland
A work in progress, Hobsonville Point is a comprehensive urban master plan for a new 167ha medium density residential community at the former Hobsonville Airbase. It is the largest new housing development in Auckland. The master plan aims to set new benchmarks for sustainable, mixed use development in New Zealand. This site provides serviced land for more than 4,500 homes along with a primary and secondary school, retail, connected open space, walkways and cycleways and a marine industry precinct. Eventually it will house 11,000 people.
The lead agency is HLC a subsidiary of Housing New Zealand Corporation.
'Hobsonville Point is being designed as a ‘walkable’ community. The safe and convenient movement of people on foot or on bikes has been made a priority.'
To connect with the wider world Hobsonville Point is served by buses, a commuter ferry to downtown Auckland, and has close access to two motorways. A few vestiges of the old community remain, like a reliable ferry service, some refurbished former airforce housing, the domain with it's war memorial gates.
A Farmer's market, voted best in Auckland, is held on Saturday and Sunday mornings. It has a new home on the waterfront, a fantastic refurbished 1930s seaplane hangar.
Hobsonville is from many viewpoints a success and proving to be an exemplar for subsequent developments in housing short New Zealand.
