Papaitonga Scenic Reserve

Horowhenua Walks

Centred on the Papaitonga dune lake, this 135ha reserve is an important refuge for birds that depend on wetlands or lowland forests for their survival. The location has historic significance for Muaupoko and was once owned by controversial ornitholigist Sir Walter Buller who in 1897, purchased Papaitongawith the intention of protecting the land around the lake for future generations.

There is just a short walk here, no dogs or mountainbiking.

Listen to the audio guide for the full story.

An overarching complex and personal view of Papaitonga, its ecology and history is given by Geoff Park in the chapter, The Lake in the Sand Country in his book Nga Uruora: The Groves of Life.
