About Wainui Beach Wainui Beach Reserve provides access to Wainui Beach, it also has neighbourhood parks with play equipment and picnic tables. A boat launch ramp is located at the end of Pare Street. The WD Lysnar Reserve has many informal tracks zig-zagging the dunes to provide walkways along the dunes and pedestrian access to the beach. There are picnic tables and a playground at the 'Pines'. The Wainui Surf Lifesaving Club is on the northern side of the Hamanatua stream.? The club was established in 1937.? The public toilets at the clubrooms are maintained by Council. Wainui Beach is a nationally recognised significant surf break. History WD Lysnar Reserve was first gifted to the Gisborne Borough Council by the Lysnar family prior to 1982. The land parcels that make up the Wainui Beach Reserve were acquired over the past 100 years. ??In 1970, 59 whales stranded at the northern-end of Okitu on WD Lysnar Reserve.? They are buried in a mass grave in the sand dunes where they came ashore.
