This serene reserve introduces you to 25 hectares of unique wildlife sited on a long sand bank extending out into the Tamaki Estuary. It is rich in Maori history as well as native birds - especially as it is a wetland that hosts mallard, pukeko, white-faced heron and black swan all year round. New Zealand shoveller and bittern sometimes visit the area. Time spent weaving through the network of paths and tracks offers a peaceful sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the city.Tahuna-Torea means gathering place for oyster -catcher. This Maori name is taken from the original name for the sandspit, the most prominent landmark of this coastal reserve.. Dog exercise: Dogs are prohibited from Tahuna Torea Reserve, the nearby beach and foreshore, and from the public walkway between 24 and 26 Vista Crescent to its boundary on West Tamaki and Tahaki roads.
