8756 Haast Highway, Haast, Westland
Hiding, jewel-like, in the World Heritage-rated forest of South Westland like a gold nugget in a placid river, Lake Moeraki is an unmodified gem. Formed by ancient glacial movement it lies just a few kilometres inland and is drained by the beautiful Moeraki River as it runs to the sea. Our guide advises "take an hour and wander along the track to Monro Beach. Fiordland crested penguins visit to lay their eggs and raise their chicks through late winter and early summer and the native clematis and fuschia light the bush in spring. It’s a stunning picture." There is an up-market Wilderness Lodge here.
