Cave Stream Scenic Reserve tracks and cave walk, Castle Hill, Selwyn
A lovely area to visit, or an incredible experience, you choose.
Caving: not for the faint hearted, and not to be undertaken at all during or after heavy rain.
DOC offers its advice on information boards but you are essentially un-guided. Traverse the cave 360 m along the stream to where it emerges to join Broken River. It takes about an hour, you need torches and you get wet and very cold. Some people have trouble climbing out at the far end.
Centuries old Maori artefacts found here are now in the Canterbury Museum.
Nearby is Flock Hill where the climatic battle scene from The Chronicles of Narnia (The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe) was shot.
