Tory Channel

The eastern end of Tory Channel forms the dramatic entrance to the South Island on the ferry route between Wellington and Picton. There are strong tidal flows through the channel so that small boats need to carefully choose their travel times. Tory Channel was the site of New Zealand's last whaling station. Tory Channel lies between Arapawa Island and the mainland. Its western end joins with Queen Charlotte Sound.
