Tunnel Beach Track, Blackhead, Dunedin City

Tunnel Beach

Dunedin City Walks

This walk enjoys coastal views. It has a steep descent - and climb up again - via a tunnel to and from a beach. Closed 1 August - 31 October during the lambing season - the walkway crosses private farmland.

Turn left off Blackhead Road into Tunnel Beach Road. Don’t miss this walk: as well as spectacular coastal views, it’s of historical and geological interest. There’s quite a steep descent - and climb up again - over cliff tops to the tunnel entrance. As you go downhill, you get great views of sea stacks, rock arches and headlands sculpted by wind and pounding surf.

Geotrips has information about the human and geological history telling us the tunnel was excavated in the 1870s by John Cargill (a son of Captain William Cargill) so that the family could bathe at a secluded location away from the prying eyes of St Clair residents. Cargill's Castle is just up the hill.
