Island Bay

Island Bay is a Wellington suburb bordering on Cook Strait with a small sandy beach and a sheltered anchorage made famous by painter Rita Angus with her picture of fishing boats.

The Island Bay Lifesaving & Surf Club maintains a rescue service, teaches beach awareness, water safety, swimming, rescue techniques and correct use of equipment, surf canoe boards, skis. There is a comprehensive children's playground across from the beach.

In February the Island Bay Enhancement Trust involves the community in anannual 9 day festival.

The coastline is now included in the Taputeranga Marine Reserve with a noticeable improvement in marine life which should increase its popularity with scuba divers.

Island Bay can reached from central Wellington on a regular bus service. (No 1)
