422 Puketutu Road, Tamihana, Matamata-Piako
Matamata is a small town in lush dairying country. The conversion of an area of a local beef and sheep farm with Hobbit holes, hedges and other planting for the Lord of the Rings film took over a year. Hobbiton looked as if it had always been part of the rolling Waikato landscape but little remained after filming.
For The Hobbit movies a permanent set was built. It was completed in 2011 and remains as a visitor attraction. As the hobbits are keen gardeners each of the 40 hobbit holes has a garden and the five or six garden gardeners try to have something on display all year round.
Visit Hobbiton on a tour from Matamata or Rotorua.
