Ridge Road, Tiritiri, Hauraki Gulf Islands
Forest restoration and pest control have provided a safe habitat for a number of rare and endangered species in this successful conservation project. The North Island saddleback, bellbird, kokako and the flightless takahe are established here. DOC calls this one of the most successful conservation projects in the world. As can be see from the photo, in the 1960s there was little bush on much of the island. This is a full day trip. Visitors are recommended to take a packed lunch as no food is available on the Island. Complimentary tea or coffee is available at the visitor centre.
Tiritiri Matangi is a full day trip and ferries do not go every day. It is worth putting a day aside (Book first!) to enjoy this special island where many native birds have been re established and cared for by conversationalists, they are very tame without any predators.
