Island Cliff-Duntroon Road, Maerewhenua-Earthquakes, Waitaki
The Elephant Rocks site on the Vanished World trail where erosion has sculpted evocative shapes in limestone. These rocks are older than 23 million years of age but appear to have acne, and somehow, the long-drop toilet has snagged the most stylish little basin for it's setting. Though it is a small patch of rocks in the middle of nowhere, it would be a must visit for fans of Disney's 2005 feature, 'The Chronicles of Narnia, the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,' as the scene where Susan learns archery was filmed here.
This is on a farm but OK to visit. NZPlaces would be especially impressed if a visitor actually found a rock shaped like an elephant and sent us an image. Until then we are inclined to believe the 'elephant' title appears to have been assigned because the rocks are large, grey and smoothish.
