Franz Josef Highway, Okarito, Westland
Many thousands of years ago when the Franz Josef Glacier was nameless and enormous, it stretched all the way to the sea. On it's retreat it left behind several massive inland icebergs. One is Lake Mapourika. The lake is dark and glimmering and fortunately the state highway skirts it's margins for a time so visitors to the wild west coast can glimpse it's prehistoric mystery. Brown Trout love it here and so do those fishing for them.
There is a DoC campsite to stay at and a lovely jetty.
