John Fensham Sanctuary for Native Trees and Birds

Carterton Walks

John Fensham gifted the reserve to the Forest and Bird Society. Nineteen hectares are regenerating on the hillside and in addition there are nine hectares of primary bush which contains a range of New Zealand's favourite podocarps including kanuka, matai, rimu black beech, titoki and kowhai between 400 and 700 years old. The environment is a magnet for native birds, especially the Kereru or woodpigeon. A wetland area is also included in the park, hosting the endangered mudfish.
There are two carparks, one off Upper Belvedere road, the other off Cobham Road. The former boasts the picnic area and both have excellent maps of the reserve and tracks. Walkers can enjoy an easy one hour a circuit track through the bush. A side track on the south-west leads to a lookout with extensive Wairarapa views. Leave your pets at home, Forest and Bird, as caretakers, run pest management programmes here.
