The Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust has an ambition to restore the ecology of Maungatautari, a forested volcanic cone rising above the Waikato basin. With 47kms of predator proof fence enclosing 3400 hectares in a sea of pastureland, it is the largest ecological island on mainland New Zealand. The website recounts the fascinating history of the area.
The Visitor Centre near the southern entrance at 'Manu Tioriori', 99 Tari Road, is open 7 days a week. This southern entrance provides the best access to the mountain. There are several options for short and long walks, including guided walks. A 16m canopy tower provides tree-top views.
