70 Te Ponanga Saddle Road, Tokaanu, Taupo
A tunnel from Lake Rotoaira feeds water to the 240 MW Tokaanu Power station. In turn Lake Rotaira is supplied from several sources apart from its natural catchment. This system of tunnels and canals known as the Tongariro scheme supplements the natural flows of water into Lake Taupo by diverting waters which would otherwise have flowed to the west. It also diverts some flows from the Tongariro river. The scheme includes an underground power station at Rangipo. The increased flows into Lake Taupo provide extra water for the power stations downstream on the Waikato river.
