Avenue Road, Ihakara, Horowhenua
This small-town courthouse functions as the local museum but is struggling for money. The Foxton Historical Society occupies this 1929 brick build, which is in need of earthquake strengthening. Its future in 2019 is uncertain.
Foxton has a strong history, Maori and Pakeha, but the town itself has been plagued by many fires, and the original buildings are fewer than they were. The ray of hope is, however, Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom, where community services and historical displays come together. The courthouse is still where the Historical Society has the main museum and store the district's archives.
A number of Foxton's other remaining Main Street buildings also sport significant heritage, including All Saint Church and Eastons Hotel, both 1876, an 1899 saddlery which houses the pharmacy, and the Chung Wah building, 1905. There is a classic Bank of New Zealand Building, and the Post Office Hotel is an "oldie but a goodie".
