1 Totara Crescent, Minginui, Whakatane
This was one of New Zealand’s most famous conservation battlegrounds, where people actively fought to save a magnificent podocarp native forest. Now there is a comprehensive network of walks, tracks and huts for visitors including a purpose built mountain bike track. The forest is accessed at Minginui which is near Murupara. When Taupo erupted about two thousand years ago it spread ash over a large area and flattened forests. The Whirinaki ash was was up to 50 cm thick. Out of the devastation grew large podocarp forests, magnificent rimu,tötara, kahikatea, mataï and miro. Whirinaki is a remaining remnant of these forests.
While many of the walks are a day or longer, the Waiatiu falls track, showing off the magnificent 'dinosaur forest' and rare bird species can be done in an hour and a half.
