Totaranui

Tasman Walks

Totaranui is beautiful beach of golden sand set in stands of native bush at the northern end of the Abel Tasman coastal track. By car it is 32 km from Takaka in Golden Bay over a winding hill road part of which is unsealed. If you don't want to walk or do the long road trip you can get a launch from Marehau at the start of the Abel Tasman coastal track. There is alarge DOC camp site here popular with families but to stay in the summer holiday period you will need to apply in advance and perhaps enter a ballot.

Near the camp is Ngarata, the homestead for the farm which once occupied the bay. Built in 1914, Ngarata is a nationally significant rare example of a New Zealand Californian bungalow of unusual structural design, in a unique and beautiful setting. The homestead is now an education centre.
