Dun Mountain Railway

Nelson City Walks

Claiming to be “New Zealand’s first railway”, the Dun Mountain Railway opened in 1862. It was built to bring chrome ore down to the port. Though this use of the line ceased in 1866, parts of its lower reaches became a city tramway. From a plaque in Upper Brook Street, the energetic can walk up this historic formation. The Dun Mountain Rail route is now part of Nga Haerenga. (The New Zealand Cycle Trail). It is suitable for most intermediate riders with a decent level of fitness required.
