26 Sunderland Street, Clyde, Central Otago
So grand was the Town Hall put up in Clyde, that it has become the Masonic Lodge, as the town never quite grew to befit the stature of the building.
Mason and Clayton designed the Town Hall, Frederick Burwell the library.
The Masons actually always shared the Clyde Town Hall, since it's inception in 1869, and only took it over completely in 1954. The Public Library directly next door served alongside the Town Hall and also moved to masonic ownership at the same time.
With dry hills, historic buildings and clear air all around, this spot on Sutherland street immediately impresses as the epicentre of small but beautifully formed Clyde. Importantly, you will find the town's public toilets tacked on the back of this important building.
Have a look at the CLYDE HERITAGE WALK page to peruse the rest of the interesting buildings in Clyde, like the old courthouse and post office.
