Austrian State Houses

Porirua City Community Halls

Here and in the surrounding streets are houses built by the State using Austrian craftsmen from pre-cut frames of Austrian larch, Four floor plans were used. The houses were designed by the Ministry of Works and built in the 1950s. Additions and alterations since they were built have given more variety to the neighbourhood. Importation of the 500 prefabricated houses and the use of Austrian tradesmen was an attempt by the National Government to overcome a shortage of both skills and materials and to encourage the local industry to construct low-cost housing.
