Ahuriri Estuary

A 4 km (1 hour) track circles this significant estuary, important for its interdependent community of birds, fish, and mud-dwellers. There is an Ahuriri Estuary Protection Society, P O Box 796, Napier. "This important wetland is a sanctuary for a wide variety of wading birds including grey herons, royal spoonbills and pied stilts. Shags, kingfishers and even gannets may also be spotted diving for fish in this area."
