3717 Cape Palliser Road, Cape Palliser, South Wairarapa
Two hundred and fifty eight steps take you up to a sweeping view of the coast and the South Island. There has been a light station here since 1897 and it still sports the original 1897 Freznel lens, which has never need replacing.
The lighthouse keepers frequently did though, as the isolation here, combined with the Cook Strait weather and the steps to the tower made it an unappealing position. Maritime NZ explain the rest.
On the coast a few hundred meters to the west you can find the inhabitants of the fur seal colony. This is believed to be the only North Island place where the fur seals breed. It is a good picnic spot in fine weather.
