440 Waikawau Road, Waikawau, Waitomo
It is not easy to reach a beach in this part of the King Country. Visiting this one justifies the effort.
Access to the beach from the road is through a stock tunnel cut with picks and shovels in 1911 by three Works Department employees. It allowed stock to use a beach route to reach Nukuhakere Station. It was sized by considering the largest horned beast and the height of a tall horseman.
South of the tunnel there are sea caves to explore but as with many west coast beaches caution must be exercised in entering the water.
