BAY OF ISLANDS SHORE TOURS FOR CRUISE PASSENGERS
As you approach Paihia your Cruise Vessel takes an unusual sort of berth. None! It will weigh anchor in the harbour because the Bay of Islands doesn't have a port, and this is part of it's charm. The pretty seaside villages you see are not cities and never will be. However the area is packed with attractions and interestingly for New Zealand, a bit of heritage. Visitors have been known to comment that Russell and Paihia are the only place in New Zealand they really 'feel history'. This may be due to the range and age of interaction between Maori and Pakeha that has happened here, and the long occupation of Early Maori before that.
Several tours are available to explain this history and visit the sites where history was made, most especially at the Treaty Grounds, where the Treaty of Waitangiwas signed.
Other activities range from mystical glow worm experiences, to wine tasting, to a virtual plethora of water based including the 'Hole in the Rock' and Cape Reinga, tall ship sailing and dolphin adventures. The calm and temperate environment of the Bay of Islands is a watersports paradise, especially in Cruise season.
Enjoy!
