109 Kioreroa Road, Port Whangarei, Port Whangarei, Whangarei
This creek, along with nearby Matakohe - Limestone Island, are significant to the environmental, industrial and cultural heritage of the Whangarei Basin. Lime and limestone are significant elements in Whangarei, quarried for industry, and burned to make calcium hydroxide for mortar. Lately Limeburners Creek, actually a mangrove marsh, has become a wetland regeneration area.
Naturally a saltwater estuary, freshwater areas here have been introduced to work as filters for Whangarei's sewage system, which isn't as bad as it sounds.
The entrance to the estuary has a gate and information panels, these features continue along the boardwalk zig zag walk through the trees. There is also a longer, two hour, walk available along a former rail track right into the mangroves.
