Dunedin architect, James Hislop, built this mill for William Evans in 1881. "Atlas" was the brand name for the flour. Evans built the mill because he believed that rather than shipping wheat overseas at a loss it would be better to first mill it into flour. Otago Daily Times 11 January 1889 reported: "Evans and Co.'s Atlas roller mill, with a capacity 40 tons per day, has started work. The excellent plant supplied by Simon, of Manchester, went to work without a hitch. The mill is fitted with the electric and all mechanical conveniences."
