Sitting snugly in a bend of the Heathcote river is this award winning 2003 public library. Designed by Andrew Barclay and Scott Koopman of Warren and Mahoney with an emphasis on sustainability, it is surrounded by a moat, with water as a central design theme. In 2004 it took out the supreme award for architecture in the NZIA awards and was also a winner in the "community and cultural" and the "colour" sections. The library building and its facilities, which include a café, immediately proved popular, drawing visitors from further afield than it's intended catchment. It was damaged in the quakes and was reopened after temporary repairs, then fully repaired.
