An impressive sweeping, 12 mile crescent of sandy beach on Stewart Island's west coast, Mason's Bay was until the second one gave up in 1985 the location of two sheep runs. Much remains of the Island Hill Homestead a short walk from the DOC tramping hut. There is a good chance of seeing a Kiwi near here. The region is also popular with deer-stalkers. These places are reached on either the Island's north-west circuit track or on the Southern circuit. Alternatively the route from Oban can be by water taxi to Freshwater Hut followed by a walk through to Mason Bay. Or take a flight and make a low tide landing on the beautiful sandy beach.
