Lake Kaniere Walkway, Kaniere-Sunny Bight, Westland
A very beautiful lake, 8 km long and 2 km wide offering a number of walking possibilities. You can also sail here. The Department of Conservation gives details of the Lake Kaniere Walkway, a four hour tramp along the western shore. The Kaniere Water Race Walkway is suitable for people of average fitness and takes just under 4hrs. The walkway follows the twists and turns of an historic power station water race as it passes along the edge of the scenic reserve. It is suitable for mountain biking.
Dorothy Falls is another attraction, it only a two minute walk, one of a variety of short walks starting from the parking area.
Camping is available at a large grassy campsite on the lakefront named Hans Bay, this is where the jetty is too, and some good fishing to be had from it.
Like most of the Coast, the Kaniere area has history in gold mining and logging, and is presently engaged in dairying.
Utterly authentic West Coast Hospitality is available at the Kaniere Empire Hotel.
