241 Ngarara Road, Waikanae Park, Kapiti Coast
Nga Manu means 'The birds.' This reserve, administered by a charitable trust, contains the largest single remaining remnant of original coastal lowland swamp forest on the Kapiti Coast. It has 15 hectares of lowland swamp forest with mature specimens of kahikatea, pukatea, rimu, tawa, swamp maire and many native shrubs and ferns. As well as being rare in that it is original bush rather than regrowth, another unique feature of this forest is that individual specimens of trees are labelled with their botanical names. Amongst the bush is a large bird watching tower and off to the side is an accommodation house for the overnight experience.
Birds which may be seen are: Kaka, Kea, Kakariki, Blue Buck, Paradise Shelduck, Shoveller, Caspian Terns, Royalspoonbills, Shags, Dabchicks, Scaup, Herons, Pukeko, Grey Teal, Grey Duck, Tui, Kereru, and kingfisher.
The reserve now features a kiwi house where the nocturnal brown kiwi may be visited, as well as other birds in aviaries. Long-fin eels, native geckos and tuatara. At 2pm every day they feed the eels and talk about them.
Mike is a private provider who can take visitors bird watching at the Waikanae Estuary at Otaihanga.
