Pouakai Crossing, Mt Taranaki, South Taranaki
The mini-mountain range on the North of Mt Taranaki is named Pouakai. Wonderfully accessible, though in a volcanic way, there are multiple entrances to this classic hiking park which is gaining in popularity.
A range of walks of differing lengths each start at the different road ends, leading to the Mangatokutuku Falls, Pouakai Tarns and Pouakai trig and hut. They do connect up if you walk far enough.
The increasingly popular Pouakai Crossing 19km day walk is being seen as an alternative to the crowded Tongariro Crossing. On the Pouakai crossing "You'll get great views of Mt Taranaki, out over the north Taranaki countryside to the coast and inland to Mt Ruapehu. You’ll get up close to the towering lava columns of the Dieffenbach cliffs, cross the active erosion scar of the Boomerang slip, and see the red water of the Kokowai Stream caused by manganese oxide oozing from the earth."
